I know most garneners find it difficult to take a week off in June and July but how about a holiday from the weeding and the mowing? Come and stay at our holiday cottage in Fife and be inspired with a Garden tour free from the need to acutally lift a finger yourself.

Whilst our Holiday let in Crail may not have its own garden, we have a sunny bench you can enjoy your cuppa on and plan which garden you are going to visit.

Here's a list, by no means exhaustive but all the gardens on it are less than 15 miles away.

Cambo House, no list of gardens near Crail could be without it! Beautiful woodland walks and unusual plants for sale, the walled garden is said to be one of the finest in Scotland.

Scotlands Garden Open Scheme is a very informative website with all the dates of private gardens who are only open perhaps one or two days a year. Of particular interest is the Fife Garden Trail which runs from late June to early July and consists of 9 privetly woned gardens all different but equally fascinating, 5 of which have never or rarely opened to the public.

Some other gardens within a stones throw of Crail are:

Balcarres House near Colinsburgh

Kellie Castle, Colinsburgh

Hill of Tarvit near Ceres

Earlshall Castle, Leuchars

There are gardens open in Crail and Pittenweem too, see the Scotlands' Garden open scheme website for details.

St Andrew's Botanic garden is a hidden gem if you want to escape from golf for a while!

Perhaps one of Fife's best kept secrets is the Fife Costal Path and it should be no secret, with stunning views, historical and ornithological interest we should all get out there and walk the walk!

Stretching 117 miles from the Firth of Forth in the south to the Firth of Tay in the north. The path ranges from easy and level to wild and demanding, walking boots are recommended but not a necessity. One of Scotland's great trails and is part of Fif's core path network.

Neuk Hoose is the ideal base for your walking holiday in Scotland,

our self catering holiday accommodation in Crail is only a few minutes walk form the path itself.

We are going to be staying our holiday cottage in Crail ourselves over the next couple of weeks and I'm really looking forward to doing a section or two! The first section obviously will be from Crail to Anstruther, as a complete novice I'm going to play it safe and start from Crail Harbour and hope to get to Anstruther where I'll have a well earned ice cream then hop on the X95 bus back to Crail. (Apologies to anyone sitting next to me on the bus if I'm a bit fragrant!)

However if you are a pro and you have the time why not try the whole section? Elie to Cambo Sands is 16 miles (28.8km) it can be rough in places and there may be muddy bits in winter but it is geographically fascinating with great historical and wildlife interest too. Allow 5-6 hours, which should give you plenty of time to explore all the hidden gems along the way. Visit the Fife Costal Path website for details of the route. This is a great section not just for the scenery but you can finish with a gourmet cheese toastie at Kingsbarns beach or a tour of the distillery, what a way to finish.

The next section is Cambo Sands to Leuchars, by far the wildest section and yet the most cosmopolitan at the same time.

One of the biggest things we have done this year on our never ending journey of restoration and upkeep at our self catering holiday cottage in Crail is to have the old Victorian door stripped and repaired.

We didn't know until we took the door off to have a proper look if we were going to be able to repair it, I desperately hoped we could. Years of salty wind and rain had really started to affect the bottom of the door and it was starting to crumble. We are firm believers in taking action now to prevent a bigger disaster!

Luckily our fabulous cleaner Lyn's husband is a specialist in rennovations, how fortunate are we! Neil worked tirelessly to repair, restore and repaint the door. Neuk Hoose is a grade 2 listed holiday let so we have to make sure everything we do is on a like for like basis, Crail is also a conservation area.

We are absolutely thrilled with the finished article and the door is back to its former glory.

The next stage is the windows.......
